Trying to ban street racing

In major cities especially Toronto and Vancouver, a serious issue that has come up is street racing.

The Conservative government introduced a bill today in the House of Commons that would hit street racers with harsh sentences and banned from taking the wheel again.

Police say 34 people have died as a result of street racing in the Greater Toronto Area since 1999. Four men were killed in Vancouver last January in a crash blamed on street racing.

The proposed federal legislation would make street racing a specific criminal offense, punishable with driving bans and stiffer sentences than those set out for existing vehicle-related crimes.

It would seem that increased education over the dangers of street racing could have more of an impact. And while this is a serious issue, the Conservatives may be playing politics by introducing this bill.
