Canada nabs terrorism suspects

The details are getting more unusual in the arrests of 17 men and youths in the alleged terrorism plot in suburban Toronto.

The most bizarre was the alleged threat to behead Prime Minster Stephen Harper unless Canadian troops were withdrawn from Afghanistan and Muslim prisoners released. The CBC headquarters in Toronto was also cited by prosecutors as a target.

The arrests have brought a spotlight to Canada's terrorism-fighting efforts. They have been active all along, but some in the States may have unfairly questioned that.

We do have to keep an eye to make sure justice is truly served and that the prisoners are treated properly. Canada should not take tips from due South on managing terrorism suspects.

One interesting stat to note: Seven of the 17 suspects are teenagers, all but 2 are 25 or younger.

This comes on the heels of the House of Commons vote to extend Canada's mission in Afghanistan for two more years. The extension was unusual in that military efforts are not typically put to a vote. The vote barely passed 149-145 with a few abstentions, including former Prime Minister Paul Martin. Liberals were able to vote their conscience, splitting the party on the issue. Conservatives voted "yes" while the NDP and Bloc Quebecois voted "no." Generally, parties in power aren't allowed to vote their conscience.
