Western Conference Champions
For the first time since 1990, the Edmonton Oilers are back in the Stanley Cup finals. The Oilers win the Western Conference finals with a 2-1 win at Anaheim.
Edmonton is the first #8 seed in the current playoff system to advance to the Stanley Cup. Whyte Avenue in Edmonton ought to be celebrating for some time after this game.
Edmonton is trying to become the first Canadian-based team since the 1992-1993 Montreal Canadiens to win the Stanley Cup. The last Canadian-based team to reach the Stanley Cup was the Calgary Flames, which lost to Tampa Bay 2 years ago. Before that, Vancouver lost to the New York Rangers in 1994.
The Oilers will have some time off to recover from a horrible flu bug that has infiltrated the team. Edmonton takes on the Buffalo-Carolina winner. When the Stanley Cup Finals are set, I will let you know.
