Quarterfinals are set

Yes, Canada can score goals, edging the Czech Republic 3-2. It wasn't pretty, but it was a win. So the win allowed Canada to finish third in Group A; now Canada plays Russia in the quarterfinals. The U.S. finished fourth in Group B; it gets undefeated Finland.

The other two matchups are a strong rivalry game between the 2005 world champion Czech Republic (2-3) and unbeaten Slovakia (5-0). Sweden (3-2) will play Switzerland (2-1-2). Even though Switzerland beat Canada, it tied weak Germany and Italy in its final two games.

In the semifinals on Friday, Sweden-Switzerland will play Czech Republic-Slovakia, and Canada-Russia will take on U.S.-Finland. So the U.S. and Canada can't both make it to the final.

One good news point for Canada; its contest with Russia will be played at the smaller of the two Olympic hockey arenas. The U.S. will be on the larger ice surface.

CBC coverage of Canada-Russia gets underway tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. EST. That game should be seen on MSNBC in the United States.
