Canada on TDS, Colbert Report
Many Americans get their news from "The Daily Show w/Jon Stewart" and now "The Colbert Report." So many Americans and perhaps some Canadians found out about the no-confidence vote from these shows on their November 29 editions.
Stewart threw in references to the Quebecois and the Maritime Provinces. He detailed the sponsorship scandal as "shocking", but the underlying joke was that the shocking part was "somewhere a Liberal Party is ruling."
He played the first part of the Stephen Harper analogy about "...the thief who cries 'Fire' in a crowded restaurant." Stewart's reply was "in that it's confusing. Perhaps preparing a flambeau dish."
Stewart then went to "Senior Canadian Bureau Chief" Samantha Bee (who is from Canada). Stewart then feigned knowledge of where Canada was before getting her to say "Eh" and "A-boot."
Colbert played it more on the sly side as is his nature. He said to his audience that he had to talk about Canada for a little while, but promised them something nice if they were patient. He referred to the $1.1 million in the sponsorship scandal as not being worth much. "And that's $1.1 million Canadian," he said as a picture of a Monopoly $500 bill came on the screen. The treat turned out to be a car being set on fire by a mechanical monster in what might be considered an "American" moment.
"The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" air Monday-Thursday on CTV, one of the private, over-the-air networks. Check your local listings in Canada, but the programs air at midnight Eastern/11p Central and 12:30a Eastern/11:30p Central on CTV.
