CFL West wrapup

The Edmonton Eskimos pulled off the upset in the nightcap Sunday, edging the B.C. Lions 28-23 in Vancouver.

Jason Maas proved himself once again as “the man” off the bench, leading his Eskimos to the winning drive. Once again, Maas came in for starter Ricky Ray with 8:04 left in the game and a 21-all score.

Maas proceeded to drive down the field for a 49-yard drive, capped by a 15-yard pass to Trevor Gaylor. That was Edmonton’s only TD pass of the night, meaning Ray continues his futility in terms of TD passes.

The Eskimos enjoyed a 21-3 lead in the first half, dominating the Lions offense and getting just enough offense on their own.

Dave Dickenson, B.C.’s starter, struggled through most of the first half, but threw a 90-yard TD pass to Geroy Simon to pull the Lions within 21-17 in the third quarter.

Casey Printers, the second quarterback for the Lions and fourth overall in the game, almost had his own successful TD drive after Maas’ effort. Unfortunately for the Lions, Printers threw an interception deep in Edmonton territory.

After conceding a safety in the end zone, Edmonton successfully held B.C. away from the end zone, and earned a right to come back to Vancouver next Sunday against Montreal.
