February 6 for the start for Harper
Mark February 6 on your calendar for the start of the Stephen Harper era. As I have mentioned before, there is a small period in between transitions, especially with different parties involved. Harper met with Governor General Michaƫlle Jean to establish the date.
These transitions are helpful, especially for Harper, who must now select a cabinet from a party who hasn't had a cabinet since 1993. As Bill Clinton found out in 1992, a large gap in power reduces the amount of experience from which to select.
Harper will also have to pick a new ambassador to the United States. Frank McKenna submitted his resignation to Harper on Wednesday. The decision was expected, but takes on special significance because McKenna is considered a candidate for the Liberal Party leadership.
The CBC reports that Preston Manning is being considered as ambassador. Manning, in case you did not know, was the first leader of the Reform Party of Canada. The Reform Party became the Canadian Alliance and then merged with the Progressive Conservatives.
I personally think Manning is not the best pick, that perhaps someone less controversial would be a better selection.
In the race to be in or out for the Liberal Party leadership, former deputy prime minister John Manley said he won't be the new leader. Then again, the vote to replace Martin probably won't happen until November.
