You're in Oil Country!!!

The Edmonton Oilers are in the Western Conference finals for the first time in 14 years. The Oilers clinched their second straight series at home, blanking the sputtering San Jose Sharks 2-0 at Rexall Place.

Michael Peca and Shawn Horcoff scored the goals, and Dwayne Roloson made 24 saves for his first career playoff shutout.

The turning point in this series may have been Edmonton's triple-overtime win in Game 3 or scoring the last 5 goals in Game 4 to win 6-3.

Roloson has never really been a star until now. He spent most of the year with Minnesota. But he is hot right now. He was lights out in Game 6.

Oh yeah, Edmonton fans made sure to cheer the U.S. national anthem; the response was so loud, the noise drowned out singer Paul Lorieau. The Canadian anthem had been booed by San Jose fans before Game 5.

The Mighty Ducks are next, and they are very well-rested. We'll see Friday if there is something to having too much rest. Buffalo and Carolina battle in the East, starting Saturday.

Some notes to mention:
  • Of the 4 teams remaining, Edmonton is the only team that has won the Stanley Cup. The Oilers won their 5th cup in 1990.
  • This was the first time the Oilers rallied from an 0-2 deficit to win a series.
  • None of the Western Conference Final games will appear on NBC. I confess I don't understand NBC's mentality. One of these teams will play for the Stanley Cup. Would be nice if your audience knew these teams.
  • In this past series, OLN's crew was on for the games in San Jose while in all 3 games in Edmonton, OLN carried the CBC feed. There was a logic to that method. On behalf of hockey fans in the U.S. who don't live near a CBC feed, please OLN, do that again. The CBC coverage is that much better.
